How to Boost Your Immune System

How to Boost Your Immune System

Your immune system is one of the most important system’s in your body–it is your body’s defense against infection or illnesses.  It works by recognizing cells that make up your body, and will try to get rid of anything unfamiliar, including bacteria or viruses.

After detecting any bacteria, viruses, or parasites, your immune system will do its best kill it.  Without a healthy and strong immune system, doing something as simple as brushing your teeth could even introduce harmful bacteria enough to make you sick.

As the new novel Coronavirus (Covid-19) is spreading quicker daily, it is ideal to maintain a healthy immune system: here are a few things you can do to boost your immune system.

1. Eat a Healthy and Balanced Diet

Eating a diet high in both fruits and vegetables can significantly help your immune system.  Fruits and vegetables contain plenty of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients, all essential for a healthy immune system.  On the other hand, eating foods high in sugar can disrupt your immune system, and lead to autoimmune problems and digestive issues.

A Few Foods Beneficial For Your Immune System:

  1. Peppers-contains Vitamin C
  2. Citrus Fruits-contains Vitamin C
  3. Almonds-contains Vitamin E
  4. Broccoli-is a good source of fibre and protein
  5. Spinach-contains high amounts of vitamin C, vitamin K, folic acid, iron, and calcium, as well as vitamins B6, B9, and E.
  6. Yogurt-rich in Calcium

2. Sleep

Getting enough sleep is important for your body to produce cytokines, a protein that effectively creates an immune response.  If you do not get enough sleep, antibodies that fight infections and cells are reduced.  Your body needs sleep to fight off infectious diseases or viruses such as the coronavirus.

3. Exercise

Exercising can relieve stress, another factor that can negatively impact your immune system.  It is recommended that at least 30 mins of exercise is preformed each day.  In addition physical activity can help flush bacteria or viruses out of the lungs and other airways.  Not only does it help flush bacteria and viruses out of airways, but it also helps your body’s antibodies and white blood cells, cells that are part of your immune system and fight off the viruses.

These are only a few methods that can help boost your immune system.  Remember to wash your hands and make sure you practice these ways to help your immune system!  Stay healthy!
