Do Masks Really Protect You Against the Coronavirus?

With the new coronavirus (Covid-19) spreading rapidly across the United States, doctors are seen wearing masks.  Many people are looking for masks as a way of protecting themselves against the new virus, but do masks really protect you against the coronavirus? And does it prevent the spread of the coronavirus?

It Depends on What Type of Mask It Is

There are two main different types of masks, a regular surgical mask, and a more specialized mask, the N95 Respirator.  Surgical masks tend to be looser, and disposable.  Doctors, dentists, and nurses often wear this mask as they treat patients.  These masks are easier to breathe in, and can protect against bodily fluids that escape the mouth, or against sprays from other people (sneezes or coughs).  Although these masks can protect against sneezes or coughs, experts recommend using special masks, known as the N95 Respirator to better protect against viruses.  Respirators are designed to protect one from particles in the air (including viruses).  In fact, according to CDC, respirators can filter out 95% of the air of airborne particles.  Often, N95 masks are used to protect when painting or handling toxic chemicals.

Overall, wearing an N95 Respirator can potentially protect you against the coronavirus, or covid-19, because it has a more protective advantage over surgical masks–so, should you wear a respirator?

Should You Wear Masks-Particularly the N95 Respirator?

From CDC, the Centers for Disease Control and prevention, it is suggested that people should only wear a face mask if a healthcare worker recommends it.  It may seem convincing to wear a respirator against the new coronavirus; however, keep in mind that health care workers are struggling to get enough masks when treating coronavirus patients.

Masks can slow the spread of the coronavirus and prevent you from getting it; but, as long as you are washing your hands or social distancing, it will generally not be needed.
