Captured! (Original Short Story)

Captured

I woke up on a scorching hot summer day in the village of the Wampanoag. I put on my deerskin leggings and tunic. Then went outside to hear the beautiful sound of birds chirping. My name is Midday Moon I am 9 years old, almost 10. I live In a large village with lots of Wigwams. I go play outside with my little sister, Sunny Seed. She is very kind.

“Hey Midday Moon want to help our parents by getting some water?” Sunny Seed says softly. I say Yes and then we are off to the lake. “Race you there!” She shouts. I run up the hill and when I run down I jump into the lake. “WHOOOOOO!!!!!!!” I yell. I grab a pail and scoop up some water. Suddenly I see a spear with someone from another tribe holding it. “IROQUOIS!!” He shouts in Algonquin. I am sure to be captured!

“Sunny Seed! Run home and warn our parents that war is coming!” I shout. She says OK and runs home without a word. While I wait for Sunny Seed I go underwater to hide. Soon I feel a cold hand pull my tunic. “Take him.” A mysterious voice says.

Right then Sunny Seed comes back. “We have our army lined up. Don’t come any closer Iroquois. Drop my brother right now.” Sunny Seed says furiously. “Take her also.” The mysterious voice says again. They take us to a village. They put us into a house then seal the door. Sunny Seed starts to cry, “Mi-Midday Moo-Moon? When will we see our parents again?” “Soon.” I say, “Soon.”

I check my birch bark bag. “Hey! I found some materials!” I find some sticks, stones, and some clay with vines tangled all over it. “We can use these things to escape!” I pick up the stick and the rock. I place a rock on the ground and twist the stick on top of it. It feels like hours until I get it to work. Finally a fire lights. Thankfully I had another stick so while the fire burnt down part of the house I make a spear.

I scrape the stick on the ground to make a sharp point. “What are you doing?” Sunny Seed asks. “Making a spear.” I say. After a couple of minutes the spear is done.  I take the pail of water from earlier and dump it on the fire. “The wall should be weak enough now!” I say. Quickly, I grab the spear and smash it into the wall. CRASH BANG!!! I hope that wasn’t to loud and I tell Sunny Seed to come.

After we run out we hide behind a house. I see guards looking at the hole we made. The chief comes. “Where are our prisoners! Why did you let them escape! Search for them now!” The chief shouts. We run as fast as we can. “Get them!” A guard shouts. We run faster and faster. “They are on our tail!” Sunny Seed says in a distressed voice. I throw my pail and a spear at the guards to delay them. After a while we see something. Something familiar.

I see lots of hills, a river and best of all our mama. “Mama!!” Me and Sunny Seed shout together. “Where have you two been?” Mama says. “We got captured.” I say. “But where’s papa!” Sunny Seed says. “He’s out hunting.” Mama says. “How did you escape though?” Mama whispers. “We never gave up.” I say. We go home and rest. Dad came back with a whole deer! We ale it for dinner and it was delicious.
