Why Is Sunscreen So Important?
It’s a sunny day, and you are heading to the pool or beach. But before, you go your parents tell you to apply sunscreen and take a hat. Does this sound familiar? You may not realize how important sunscreen is. So, instead, think twice before going out on a sunny day, without your trusty sunscreen. Most people think sunscreen is only important for the summer, to protect from sunburns, but there is more to the importance of sunscreen.
No matter what your skin tone is, it is very important to apply sunscreen. Did you know you should always where sunscreen, even on cloudy days? That’s because up to about 80 percent of the sun’s rays can pass through the clouds. During winter seasons, snow can reflect about 80 percent of the sun’s ultraviolet rays. So, don’t think sunscreen isn’t necessary during the winter or fall season!
Sunscreen also lowers your chance of receiving skin cancer. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the USA. If you apply sunscreen daily, you reduce your chances of receiving skin cancer greatly. Here are a few other things to know about applying sunscreen:
- The sun’s highest rays happen around 10am-2pm
- Don’t try to get vitamin D from the sun
- Be careful with snow and water, as they will reflect the sun’s rays, making it easier to get damaged from the sun
- Don’t tan on tanning beds-tanning beds actually promote aging of the skin (there are other ways to get tan!)
Applying sunscreen also reduces wrinkled skin. To much sun exposure, can lead to the damaging of the skin, which can lead to premature aging of the skin! Yikes! You wouldn’t want to be in your 40s, but have skin of an 80 year old, right? Sun damage can create a discolored, wrinkled, and thick look, because of the sun’s ultraviolet rays.
