Pi Day

When you first think of 3/14/15 you would probably think of Pi, not the one we eat but the mathematical term Pi (3.14159265…). But what’s special about the date 3/14/15, you ask? Well, to start off Pi is a mathematical term (constant) that is equivalent to the ratio : circumference to diameter of any perfect circle. Pi is an irrational number because it goes on forever without repeating. Who discovered Pi? There is still a lot of debate about this. Some believe it was first approximated by the Egyptians because the constructions of their pyramids leaves evidence of the architects possible knowledge of Pi. Archimedes created the first known algorithm for calculating Pi. You need to know the first forty digits of pi to find the accurate circumference, area. or volume of spheres and circles. I actually memorized the first forty digits of Pi the night before pie day. To some people it might seem like way too much but really it’s not too hard if you break it up into separate patterns: 3.141592653= 3/14/15 9:26:53. That part is pretty easy to memorize. Now try the rest: 3.141592653 5897 93238 46264 3383 27 9502 884 1971. So back to where I started… Pi day comes every year on March 14th. But in 2015 its Super Pi Day! Because the first 5 digits of Pi are 31415 and the date is 3/14/15. This happens once in a century! So it’s a once in a lifetime experience (unless you live that long).
