Montgomery County Agricultural Fair 2017

Does No Rides Mean No Fun?

Funnel cakes, ferris wheels, and friends what’s not to like? Yesterday, my friend and I went to the Montgomery County fair and we had a blast! Most people go to the fair in the afternoon and at night on the weekends but since this fair is only open for ten days every year, weekend lines are super long.

That’s why we went to the fair bright and early on a Monday morning. Our original plan was to go on all of the popular rides before the crowds start to pour in. We went to the fair at 10:00 (when it opened) and then we were informed that due to the weather the rides were going to open at 12:00.

At first we were bummed but in the end I wouldn’t have had it any other way. Usually when people go to fairs they go on all of the rides and play all of the games. Most people don’t even know how much fun the agricultural section can be. Some people don’t even know that it exists!

The Agricultural Section

Near the Agricultural section there were a lot of vendors and information tents about all kinds of services and products. Ranging from monogrammed rings, to palm readings, and even spine inspections! They were quite a sight to look at but the prices were over the roof, a water bottle costed 3 dollars!

After you get past the various vendors you get to the information tents, I remember one of them was about doing paid surveys. Last year I actually volunteered at a Montgomery County Watershed tent. We were offered loads of free stuff but didn’t take much since we didn’t have anywhere to put them.

The Animals

The agricultural section is filled with farm animals and food. We saw giant pigs, all kinds of bunnies (some were even for sale), 3 types of ducks, goats, sheep, cows, chickens/hens/roosters, ponies, and horses. Seeing the animals is one thing but seeing them in action was another.

There were many animal events held and I wish I could’ve seen all of them. These are the one’s that I did watch: The Golden Retriever segment in a dog show, dogs were judged based on their training, looks, tricks, and talents. A meat goat auction, this one made me sad so we only watched the first minute of it. I also saw teenage horse racing, it was really intense and there was dirt and dust everywhere.

We saw the first few minutes of a bunny contest and a pig contest. Some of the judges were mean and disqualified animals if they had unusual colors or were overweight. The chicken contest was the best and the funniest of all. There were all sorts of chickens, some were white and had black spots like a Dalmatian, some were golden and had black feather outlining, and a few even looked like they had afros!

There were also many events that we missed or couldn’t see such as a horse beauty contest, pig racing, and duck racing. Other than these shows you could also pet a goat, watch a sheep being shaved, help groom a horse, hold a bunny, and even milk a cow. I even got to touch a duck but it ran away so I guess I poked it instead of petting it.

Wacky But Delicious Food

The food there was also really delicious. The dairy bar had some wacky but delicious flavors like moose tracks and muddy sneakers. Bubba’s bacon was one of my favorites, I ordered bacon on a stick which was mouthwatering. I really wanted to try some of the other options on their menu like the chocolate covered bacon on a stick and bacon smores on a stick.

After all of that fun it was finally 12:00 and that meant carnival time! My favorite rides were the ring of fire and the f5. I really recommend going to the Montgomery county fair if you’re in town.

The Montgomery County Agricultural Center was founded in 1949. This fair has over 50 buildings and more than 5,000 animals every year. There’s 62 acres of animals, rides, entertainment, food, and fun for the whole family to enjoy!
