Surgery is a very complex and intense line of work especially when it comes to life and death situations. Transplant surgeries are one of the more rigorous ones. Arm, leg and heart transplants are being performed all the time. But a head transplant seem like something that belongs in a science fiction novel.
Although many people believe that this head transplant will not by successful and is an unrealistic procedure. I hope that it will work, but as with even the most simple surgeries you aren’t guaranteed a certain outcome.
An Italian scientist has planned the first human head transplant for December 2017. A Russian man with a rare disease volunteered to be the first patient. The 30-year-old Russian has a degenerative muscle condition known as Werdnig-Hoffman.
The man who volunteered for this surgery had a medical condition that limited his movement to only eating, and maneuvering his wheelchair. His medical condition degenerates all of the muscles in his body as well as nerves. So if he gets a head trans plant, (his head on someone else’s body) he would no longer be physically challenged.
To perform this surgery the muscles and blood supply from the donated body would then be joined with the patients head. And the patient would be kept in a coma for three to four weeks to prevent movement as they’re healing.
Although it might just seem easy like connecting one vein and one nerve to the other. But if you think of how many nerves there will be and all of the tiny little things that can go wrong and be fatal, there is indeed a lot of risk involved.
