Astrotwins! Project Blastoff, By Mark Kelly

Do you like adventure books? Do you like books about space? If you do, then, you will definitely like Astrotwins by Mark Kelly (former NASA astronaut). It all starts when Mark and Scott Kelly destroy their dad’s calculator. Their parents send them to their Grandfather’s house. However, once there, the twins start fighting. To make the twins stop, their Grandfather tells then to build something. The twins think of building a rocket.

During lunch their grandpa invites a strange girl over to eat with them. The twins call her “Egg.” It turns out that “Egg” also likes space and saw a rocket launch the day before the twins wanted to see it. The twins ask the girl to join their team to build the rocket. They all plan to meet again at the public library. When they get to the library “Egg” brings an unusual boy named Howard. The Twins don’t like Howard very much at the  time. However, as it turns out, Howard is really good at programming. At the library they all study about Isaac Newton’s 3 laws.

The next time the twins go to their grandpa’s house they bring a friend along named Barry who is really good at math. They start discussing what the rocket will look like. They decide that the rocket will resemble NASA’s Mercury rocket. They next start looking for a launch site. They find a  lake near their grandpa’s house from which they can launch their rocket. But the question is how will they build their rocket, and where will they get their supplies?

Who goes to space?

“Egg” brings a friend named Liza to help. She brings her because she knows how to weld. Also Liza’s dad owns ” Nando’s Car Repair.” They get their supplies from his shop. But soon the question becomes who will go into space? To make the decision fair, they go to an amusement park with Barry’s brother. They go on all sorts of rides. They award each person points for bravery, patience, etc. and take points away for rudeness, etc. In the end Mark ( One of the Twins) earns the most points. When Scott ( Mark’s Twin) hears about this, he is furious because he wants to go into space.

Some time later the twins’ neighbor ( “Lori” ) is riding her bike without training wheels for the first time. Scott releases their dog (Major Nelson) to chase Lori knowing that Mark will try to stop the dog. Major Nelson starts to chase Lori. Mark seeing this, sprints to Lori and tackles Major Nelson. Lori is unhurt but Mark breaks his arm. The next week the group discusses who will go to space and decide it will be Scott. A week later it is time for launch.

Will Scott become the first kid to go to space or will he meet a ghastly fate? Read Astrotwins to find out!
