What is an Avocado?
What’s black and lumpy on the outside but smooth and green on the inside? If you guessed an avocado, then you’re right. Americas new favorite fruit! The life cycle of an avocado is something like this: Not ripe, Not ripe, Not ripe, Not ripe, Not ripe, EAT ME NOW, Too late 🙁 I love avocados but you rarely ever eat an avocado when it’s perfectly ripe.
But those are just things about avocados that most people already know. But did you know that Mexico supplies 45 percent of the international avocado market? That’s almost half of the entire market! But this actually makes a lot of sense now that I think about it since almost all of the packages that I see avocados in say Mexico. 85% of all avocados in the United States were imported from another country.Mexico must be making a fortune off of avocado sales.
The History of Avocados
Every living thing has it’s own history like how we evolved from apes and birds evolved from dinosaurs. So where did avocados come from? Archaeologists have found evidence that goes back almost 10,000 years in Mexico, of avocado consumption.

Tribes like the Incas, Mayas, and other Mesoamerican tribes started cultivating avocados a little over 5,000 years ago! Avocados aren’t only popular in Mexico, Brazilians actually add avocados to their ice cream.
An avocado is a fruit believe it or not, it’s similar to the apple but can also be very different. They both grow and mature on trees. Apples also grow red and ripe on trees, but avocados don’t ripen until they are picked! Avocados have around 4 grams of protein per fruit making them the fruit with the most protein. They also have 21 grams of fat! That doesn’t necessarily mean that they are bad for you, it’s considered good fat.
