The Pros of Social Media
Social media is a great way to express yourself and your feelings. It makes you feel closer to people that you might be physically far from since you can see their pictures and what they’ve been up to.
It’s also easier for people to take rude comments and criticism over a screen rather than face to face, in some situations. Sometimes it can also be a good distraction and a break from stress. But you don’t want to be that person who spends an entire day behind their phone screen either.
In some ways having a social media account could be beneficial for you if you want to advertise your talent. If you are a musician or an artist, a social media account could really jump start your fan base or career even.
The Cons of Social Media
On the other hand if you misuse your social media for inappropriate or abusive posts. Then it would diminish your likelihood of college or career acceptance. That would go nowhere but south. Cat-fishing (fake identities) is only one of the major issues associated with it along with cyber bullying and public backlashes as well.
While it might strengthen some relationships it could also end others. If you forgot to tag a friend in a post, then an unnecessary feud would start between two friends. Jealousy can be easily triggered due to follower, likes, and comment counts.
It has also been negatively affecting the sleep patterns of teenagers. One study shows that 37% of the teens they surveyed were sleep deprived due to social media. This results in teens preforming badly in school or having a cranky attitude which definitely won’t help them in any way.
